Our Team
TIMOTHY BATES / Principal
Tim was admitted to the bar in 1992 having successfully obtained an LLB(Hons) degree at Auckland University. He has practised law in NZ ever since, apart from a two year stint in the United Kingdom. Tim has appeared and conducted litigation in the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. His peers would describe him as hard working, thorough, and highly competent in his chosen areas of law. He carries out his work with the right balance of seriousness and affability, and prides himself on advancing clients matters expediently.
Tim has offered his time to the Grey Lynn Citizens Advice Bureau as a volunteer legal adviser from 2017 until 2020.
Tim is a columnist to the Building Today magazine, and has been commissioned to assist the Building Better Homes Towns Cities National Science Challenge as regards Affordable Homes. He is a regular speaker at construction themed conferences.
Outside of the law, Tim is an avid music appreciator, and loves being involved in sport and outdoor activities with both of his children. He also enjoys cycling, and most days a week you will find him commuting to work by bike. For the last 10 years or so he has taken part in the Round Taupo Cycle Race.
CARLY GILL / Administrator
Carly is an experienced administrator who supports Tim and ensures the TM Bates Office runs smoothly and efficiently. From working in Tech Sales through to a variety of administrative and office management roles, Carly has accumulated several skills that prove themselves useful in a variety of applications.
Carly also has a career as a music producer and musician. In this space she undergoes a variety of creative projects involving audio production and recording, and live performance. This includes creating music for her artist project and other artists, speaking at industry conferences, particularly Ableton-affiliated events, as well as national and international touring as part of her music duo. It’s safe to say Carly holds a strong passion for music and sustains an admirable work-ethic towards all facets of her professional life.
Additionally, Carly takes a strong interest in yoga. She’s been practicing Ashtanga yoga for 6 years. She also loves reading a good book, drumming, and enjoying the sun when it comes out.
